This undated photo from the International Bird Research Center in Cordelia, California shows an x-ray of an injured duck with a broken wing, but also clearly shows what appears to be the face, or head, of an extraterrestrial in the bird's stomach.

Just in case you've been out of the loop for a while....

Since early 2003, Sudanese armed forces and Sudanese government-backed militia known as “Janjaweed” have been fighting two rebel groups in Darfur, the Sudanese Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). As part of their operations against the rebels, these forces have waged a systematic campaign of “ethnic cleansing” against the civilian population who are members of the same ethnic groups as the rebels. The Sudanese government and the Janjaweed militias are responsible for the burning and destruction of hundreds of rural villages, the killing of tens of thousands of people and rape and assault of thousands of women and girls. The Sudanese government’s campaign has forced more than two million Darfurians from their homes. As of 2006, some 1.8 million displaced Darfurians live in camps in Darfur and approximately 220,000 have fled into Chad as refugees. They are unable to return home due to continuing attacks when they try to return, and escalating insecurity.

Detroit Council Wants Hike In Own Budget Despite Massive City Deficit

as reported by WDET 101.9FM - Detroit Public Radio - March 28, 2006

"The Detroit City Council is requesting an increase in its operating budget…despite a city deficit estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter has more…Council has voted each year for more than a decade to give a raise to members and their staff. Now the nine-person Council wants a nearly 16 million dollar increase in its budget. That’s almost two million dollars for every council member…compared to about one million per member in New York City…and 300-thousand per member in Chicago. But the request may be changed.Council’s own fiscal analyst estimates the city budget is stained with 300 million dollars of red ink.Officials in Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s administration say they have cut their overall budget by 40 percent in recent years…and are accepting a 10 percent pay cut the Mayor wants all city employees to accept.Yet even with the cuts…the Kilpatrick Administration still spends four times the amount that…for example…the Mayor of Chicago spends on a per capita basis. Some council members reportedly say they need a larger budget than their counterparts in other cities…because each member represents ALL of Detroit…rather than a lone district or ward.Former Council Member Alonzo Bates faces indictments for having allegedly used his budget to hire employees who did no work on behalf of the city. Serbia Road Trip

Before I could get my Sunday started good, I was compelled to watch a segment on CBC News: Sunday this morning. CBC News: Sunday airs on CBC-TV at 10:00 am on Channel 99 (Comcast), which is old air Channel 9 in Detroit. Videojournalist Stefan Randstrom went to Serbia and Bosnia to see what had changed in the ten years since the end of the armed conflicts. He takes an emotional road trip with a Serbian brother and sister as the two fight over the truth about their own bloody history. They cross the Serb border and go into Bosnia, hitting four prominent cities where war-time atrocities occurred, including where more than 7,000 people died in a single incident at Srebrenica alone. It was really interesting. Did you know that the peace agreement that brought the three years of war to a halt was signed in Dayton, Ohio? That same little town on I-75 that I roar through at jet-fighter speeds on my way to Memphis, Atlanta, Mobile, Orlando and other points south held a fricking peace accord! On November 21, 1995, Bosnia and Herzegovina president Alija Izetbegovic, Croatian president Franjo Tudman and Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic signed the Dayton Agreement. And to think, I've never stopped once during the 100+ times I've driven through Dayton, not even to buy gas........
